Spatial development and its role in the balance of urban development in Libya

Abstract

One of the prominent phenomena that Libya witnessed during the second half of the twentieth century was urbanization, the growth of the urban population, and the increase in the number and size of cities, which resulted from migration from rural areas and deserts to cities on the one hand, and from small towns to major cities and urban centers on the other hand.
This increase in the urban population was accompanied by many problems resulting from the excessive concentration of the population in specific urban centers. In response, the responsible authorities in the country worked to follow a planning approach to reduce the population growth rates of major cities compared to other cities.
To mitigate the problems associated with population concentration in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, through a comprehensive and spatially balanced urban development policy in line with the capabilities and resources available to each region of the country.
