Urban area roads in tarhuna city

Abstract

     This study examines the condition and development of roads in the urban area of Tarhunah city, focusing on the importance of urban planning to develop the road network. The study explains the emergence of roads in the city, which initially started randomly, but a development plan was put in place. The study reviews the condition of roads up to 1980, where streets ran in different directions, It links commercial areas together and with external transportation routes. Some of these roads were narrow and winding alleys within neighbourhoods. The city was connected by three external transportation routes: Al-Khums to the east, which connects to the Tripoli Road heading west, then the Bani Walid-Tripoli Road passing through the city centre, and a local road leading to the springs of Sharshara recreation area to the north. The plan suggested that the city's expansion should be concentrated towards the east, and relatively towards the northwest, as they are rocky areas unsuitable for agriculture. However, the plan was completely neglected, as some road tracks were encroached upon by expanding the area of residences at the expense of the planned roads, resulting in winding roads not exceeding five meters in width, and a lack of organization with the emergence of random neighbourhoods, where traffic on the roads is governed by whims, desires, and personal interests. Therefore, this study provides recommendations to improve the city's urban planning, including reorganization, regulating road directions, increasing the number of car parks, and raising awareness about the importance of urban planning and its impact on traffic and transportation within the city.
