Abstract

The issue of sustainable development has captured the world's attention since the Earth Summit in 1992, and a consensus has been reached in conferences held by United Nations organizations on this matter, that the development process, unless guided by environmental, social, cultural and ethical considerations, will have many of its results either of little benefit or failure.
This is provided it does not have dire consequences for resources and the capabilities of ecosystems. Based on the various definitions of sustainable development, foremost among them the definition of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, which revolves around meeting the basic needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations.
The United Nations Environment Programme's definition states that improving the conditions of human existence while remaining within the carrying capacity of ecosystems.
