Abstract

The study area is located in the southern part of the Green Mountain, along the main Al-Makheili–Al-Kharouba road. It includes a variety of culverts that serve as forced outlets for floodwaters, extending from the Al-Makheili culvert (Wadi Al-Ramla) in the east to the Wadi Al-Qarna culvert in the west. The study covered approximately 38 culverts, which were classified into two types based on their shape—cylindrical and box—and into four types based on their dimensions. The study aims to assess the impact of floods on these hydraulic culverts For the exits of the valleys of the Balta al-Ramla basin and to design suitable outlets capable of accommodating the discharge volumes of the associated valleys. The findings revealed that most of the culverts’ dimensions are not consistent with the design requirements to handle the sudden discharge resulting from high-intensity storms. Floods have caused severe damage to several culverts within the study area.

The study recommends constructing bridges of varying lengths that correspond to the size of the drainage basins, the characteristics of the drainage network, and the geomorphological features of the surface on which each culvert is built. It also recommends the excavation of water channels to protect residential areas and various human activities within the study region
